TREMA! Festival de Teatro
SIDE A
*** text from the festival program
“Considering that living is a stratagem cultivated between what can be seen and what dwells in the invisible, we follow the trail of the arrow that crosses time: the opposite of life is not death, the opposite of life is disenchantment. For the forms of knowledge that border this land and breathe air, breath, and words of strength to drive away the colonial specter, life and death overflow the limits of a merely physiological understanding to inscribe themselves in other dimensions. (...) The cry echoes. A diseased way of being has settled in this land, a vast repertoire of forms of disenchantment that today make us believe that this simulacrum assigned to us is a “normal” way of life. Whenever a sound is heard in the forest, the dream bird visits us, smoke is blown to drive away distress, a caboclo shoots his invisible arrows to remind us that living is more than the leftovers of the evil eye and the scarcity managed by the “good men.” (…) Pay attention to the cycles: nature teaches us when renewal is called for, ancestral ethics challenges us to consider what answers we will give to the dismantling of the world. To honor and beat the drum for those who carried us on their shoulders, those whom we will carry and bind together, mending the cycle, there is only one path: to respond with our own lives.”

SIDE B
*** text from the festival program
In the tussle between vitality and mortality, enchantment and venom, we grapple with Brazil. We throw our bodies into dance and, through the breath of the flute, into the hope of a poetic and political turning point that may transmute these energies. At this point, we issue a provocation and affirm that Brazil urgently needs to go wrong. (…) In short, what has been built here is an extremely successful slaveholding enterprise that fucks with bodies, grinding down women, children, and men, cutting down forests, disenchanting rivers and streets. It has worked to this day, with plenty to spare. (…) Our chance is to begin going wrong, as individuals and as a collective, with the utmost urgency. We need to grow like the jasmine vine, with its delicacy, and like the thousand-year-old strength of the sumaúma trees of the forest; to act like the espinheira-santa leaf in its strategies of war, along the edges of thorns, and in healing diseases when enchanted by caboclos.”
